Letter From Team Digital - Erica Belton

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"  ~Robin Williams
And it is like a party; I get a real buzz when creating Spring Kits, for a start there are such gorgeous colours associated with Spring and it gives you a feeling of being at the one with the world and that there is hope for tomorrow. I had this in mind when I created my new kit Springading Ding.

Spring has always been a special time for me, celebrating my birthday at the beginning of April and being born in the UK but now living in New Zealand has turned what used to be for me burgeoning Spring in the Northern Hemisphere to the end of Summer lazy days in the Southern Hemisphere - Wikipedia says, "According to the astronomical definition, spring begins on the Vernal Equinox (usually March 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, and September 21 in the Southern Hemisphere".

You'd think it'd be confusing but it's not. Spring, whatever hemisphere you reside in is about celebrating transition and re-birth, a time of growth, renewal and new life, trees andTL2 plants coming into bud after being dormant for the winter, the bright greens of the new leaves and beautiful blossoms and for me, I used to love walking the Bluebell woods in England and picking armfuls of the precious flowers for my mother and I had this nostalgic thought in mind when I created the Bluebells and Buttercup Kit

What will Spring bring for you this year, a hope for better times in our economy, a renewal of faith in ourselves? Whatever Spring has in store for you take note of what the international calendar is reminding us to celebrate.

March 8 - International Women's Day
March 17 - St Patricks Day
March 21 - First Day of Spring

I don't know about where you are, but here it is still COLD, but there is hope! The last traces of snow are off the ground and even when it does snow, (yes, we still get a bit of snow now and then) it usually doesn't last for more than a day and we rarely have to shovel! Yay!

About this time every year, I NEED some hope, I NEED to know that spring is coming, I NEED to see the first green shoots from my tulips popping out of the ground. Unfortunately those shoots are probably still a few weeks away, for me. Luckily, however, through the magic of the internet and your layouts, I can bask in the sunshine, even in the dead of winter. I also find that scrapping sunny pictures or designing outdoors-y type kits, give me the fix I need until we can be outside, without four layers of clothing. LOL

FD1I made this layout of my daughter enjoying the beautiful flowers in our backyard, using my The Zing of Spring and The Zing of Spring Again page kits, which are the featured kit and the posting bonus for this week. Even though the flowers are gorgeous, her awesome smile is even better. Come on over and give my challenge a try. I actually do things in two parts. The Goodies with Gundi challenge which is a standard "use the featured kit and get a bonus" type challenge. The second part is where you can even have more fun, you can help me "Build A Goodie (BAG)", so you get some say in what will be in the bonus. Plus one lucky person who makes suggestions, will be chosen in a random draw, to send me a picture or pictures and I will create a layout for them, using a kit created specifically for those pictures. Talk about having things match! LOL

So whether you are getting ready to switch to spring or autumn, I hope you take the time to try something new. That is one of the fabulous things about DSP, with such a huge site, there is always something new and exciting to learn, great tutorials in the campus to try out, classes to take, friends to make and memories to record.

Member Spotlight: Klamb1111

SpotlightThe DSP Member Spotlight for March is Katie – you will know her as Klamb1111.

For someone who says she cannot type, paint or draw, her layouts are pure works of art. Katie says she likes softer style layouts with lighter colors, and loves fantasy layouts, which she finds “easier to create than a more traditional style layouts.”

“The fantasy layouts allow me to paint a picture but since I can not paint or draw I use the kits elements” she says.

Her inspiration comes from the photos she uses in her layouts. “Scrapping, to me, has always been about displaying my photos and making them look as beautiful as possible. Other than that basically anything that has a soft, light, airy feeling to it inspires me.”

Congratulations Katie. Thank you for being our member spotlight. Be inspired by Katie’s Gallery and read more about her HERE and the Scraplift the Spotlight challenge for March.

It's Shop Time!

Shop Time Inspiration by Erica

It’s time to SHOP… let’s get those baskets at the ready.

“Boys are beyond the range of anybody's sure understanding, at least when they are between the ages of 18 months and 90 years.” ~James Thurber

I love that particular quote, my heart smiles every time I think of it, I love all the 'boys' in my life but sometimes they take a back seat, like when I'm totally focussed on scrapping...I was looking for that special kit to make a layout of a great photo I had of hubby and quite frankly I was stuck for choice when I went searching the store for Boy/Masculine goodies. It's jam packed full with wonderful kits that are just the right theme and colour combination for the men in your life – did you know you can do a search for any colour you want, my particular quest was for something with green overtones as the photo I was scrapping was of him and his golf buddies (his favourite hobby) and it's so easy to find just the right products when you do a colour search

Have you checked out the theme gallery lately, you’ll find lots more kits plus some awesome word art, ploppers, alphas and wow – loads more ideas.

Did You Know... can get to the store by typing in your browser URL bar?  Get to the store even faster!

Do you love the product you just purchased and want to tell others?  Please consider doing a review ... pass the good word along!  We love to hear from you.

Happy shopping…

Inspiration for New and Advanced Digital Scrappers!

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

Putting on your Mask

Masks are hot property at the moment – no, not like Halloween masks (they are definitely not scary) and not gorgeous Venetian Masked ball masks (although these can be used for beautiful effect). No, I am talking about one of those wonderful little tools that make Digital Scrapbooking so fantastic. Where you can become your own creative special effects expert with a simple click of your mouse!
I am talking about the Clipping Mask, which has to be one of the most effective, yet deceptively simple tools, available for use in most photo imaging software toolboxes.

Simply put, a clipping mask hides (it’s a mask remember) and reveals information on your working layer. Why a mask? A mask hides information, it is not deleted. The image can MT3be moved or altered or released from the clipping mask with very little fuss.

The dramatic effect of a mask on a photograph is clearly demonstrated in the layout Beautiful by Mandy (Scrapping4Him) using a mask from the Maskee Large QuickBits Set 2 by Marcee Duggar. Mandy says she put together this stunning layout in about 10 minutes!

I used one of Lauren Bavin’s Messy Quick Bits Masks to mimic the effect of pink paint behind my photograph in my layout The Pink Feather Boa. Papers that work well behind a clipping mask are papers with a painted look, glitter look, or textured effect. An old MT4fashioned painted postcard used with a mask MT1in Talktopam’s layout Painted Autumn shows just how effective a mask can be.

They are wonderful for melding a photograph into a paper as Jeanet did for her layout Fun in the snow.

If you haven’t tried one of these, have a look at a couple of these layouts from the DET and DET Alumni for inspiration:
Believe in Love by HeatherH
Waiting for Christmas by Jeanet
Loving the Tongue Shot by Scrapping4Him
My Inspiration by HeatherH

The DSP Store has a section dedicated to these gorgeous masks – called QuickBit Templates they are well worth a look.

Simple Treatments for Mixing Graphic & Paper Styles
I am always in awe of the graphic style layouts I find in the DSP gallery.  The intricate blending work, unique photo treatments, and "out of the box" style planning that goes into them is incredible.  But my brain doesn't seem to work that way.  I am a paper style scrapper. Give me realistic elements and drop shadows, and I'm a happy girl.  Looking at the gallery, I'd say a lot of you feel the same way. So how can we create a graphic style layout like the ones that inspire us, and yet stay in our comfort zone?
Start with a photo you love, enlarge it to fill the canvas (either horizontally or vertically, depending on your photo's orientation), and place it on a background that coordinates with the color and texture of your photo along the other edges.
Using a layer mask (PS / PSE / PSP), blend just the open edges of the photo into that background.  Leave the rest of the photo untouched at full opacity.
Now here's where we cheat a bit and let our software programs do the work for us!  Choose another background paper that has an interesting design or texture.  Add it to your canvas as the top layer.  In your layers palette, choose the blending mode that looks best to you.  (I used Hard Light, but Overlay and Soft Light looked great, too!)  Look at that, you just created a very graphic style layout!  Now, let's finish it off.

Add your journaling, title, and just a few elements (don't forget your drop shadows) to create a layout with a wonderful mix of paper and graphic styles.  Beautiful!  Enjoy adding a new look to your album!
