Letter
from Team Digital & Featured Designer – Marcee Duggar
It's
that time of year
where all major holidays are behind us and where we find ourselves
settling back into our normal routines of life.
Finding more time to work on our favorite hobby Scrapbooking. I am sure
there are still lots of pictures to scrap and moments to be
remembered in our pages. DSP has a kit for almost every occasion and
more being added to the store every week.
I hope that you can find time to check out all the classes and
challenges we have here at DSP, you will never run out of ideas and
inspiration here.
DSP is not only a place for digital scrapbooking but a place to make
good friends and share your lives, I know I have.

DSP Member Spotlight
for February is Sharon a.k.a. Sharon Lyn
Check out her gallery here
February is Valentine’s month, and our Spotlight has a
gallery with layouts you are sure to fall in love with. She says she
found herself pulled into digital scrapping by her sister, and loves
the no mess, portability of digital scrapbooking.
She finds inspiration in the galleries of her sister (Caro), PQ and
Mars, saying that if she was “half as creative I would never
want for anything”.
While Sharon doesn’t feel she has a particular style, she
says her starting point is always a kit and then she finds a photograph
to fit. Sharon also doesn’t have a favorite layout, she says:
“I enjoy all my pages and my favorite thing is I am going to
be leaving behind a legacy that I never had plenty of
memories.”
Thank you for sharing your talent with us Sharon. Now that you find out
more about February’s talented DSP Member Spotlight, visit Sharon’s Gallery.
Then join the Scraplift the Spotlight Challenge
for your chance to win
a lucky draw DSP Store Voucher.

DSP
Photography
Challenge is Back!
Dust off those
cameras and
lenses!
Here's how it works:
On the first day of each
month, a new challenge will be announced in the Photography Challenge
Forum.
You will have until the
15th of each month to post your photo in the Photography Challenge
Gallery. (Please do
not frame
or add anything to your photos.
You may "fix" photos in editing programs. Address
any question to the Photography Challenge
Forum.)
Around the 18th of each
month, the voting poll will open, where all DSP members will have a
chance to vote on their favorite image. Voting will close on
the 26th of each month, and winners will be announced around
the 27th. Please come to the Photography Challenge
Forum
and
give us your ideas for future themes.
Our first place winners
will receive a $3.99 voucher for the DSP store!
Our first challenge will
be "Out My Front Door or Down the Block". Show us your best
shot of where you live - it doesn't have to be in your neighborhood,
just somewhere near your home.

Creating
a Blended Photo Background for Your Layout
This
very simple technique is a very
useful way of creating a layout that combines both graphic and paper
styles in one layout. It also allows you to use and feature a photo
that might not be as sharp as would be ideal.
Choose the background paper you wish to use.
In my example I have used a lighter coloured background with some
texture which adds interest when the photo is blended.
Drag your photo or paste your photo as a new layer above the paper and
resize so it fill the entire canvas.
With your photo layer active click on the mask button at the base of
the layers panel. (Looks like a shaded rectangle with a circle in it.)
This will apply a mask to your photo layer.
In the layers panel this is shown as a white box to the right of the
thumbnail of your photo layer.
Note how the mask box is shown with black corner lines – this
means when you paint you are actively painting on the mask not on the
actual photo layer.
Your foreground and background colours should also revert to black and
white at this point.
| To
blend the photo seamlessly into the
background go to the gradient tool. Choose the Black to White
gradient
from the drop down box beside the gradient sample in the tool options
bar, and the first option to the right of that which is linear
gradient. |
Now place your
cursor at
the bottom of the photo and drag up approximately 2/3 of the way to the
top. When you release the
cursor a gradient will have been applied to
your mask and this will hide that portion of the photo which is darker.
The darker the part of the gradient the less visible the photo is.
|
 |

|
Click
now on the photo
thumnail so the dark corner lines show on that and not on the mask
layer. Any editing you do now will be to the photo and not the mask.
Now you can experiment changing the blend mode of the photo until you
get the result you like.
Each photo/paper combination will have a completely unique look.
In the first example I have used the lighter greyish paper and an
Overlay blend mode and in the second example I have used a darker blue
background and the photo is in Screen Blend mode.
There
is no right or wrong combination, the best way to find your favourite
combination is to experiment.
Now you can go ahead and complete the rest of your layout by adding
more photos and embellishments.
