Scanning

Scanning your photos is one of the first steps in digital scrapping if you don't have a digital camera or have your photos on a CD. There are a few basic things you need to know about scanning to get you started.

Every photo is made up of tiny dots called pixels. How many pixels you have in an inch determines the clarity of your photo. This is called resolution. When scanning, you want the resolution of your photos to be between 200-300 pixels or dots per inch (ppi or dpi).

If you have a 4x6 photo and you want it to be a 4x6 photo on your scrapbook page you can scan it at 200dpi (so your photo would be 800 pixels by 1200 pixels.) If you have a photo that is 2x3 but you want it to be 4x6 on your scrapbook page, you will need to scan it at 400dpi so that you still end up with 800 pixels by 1200 pixels.
